STYLES & LEVELS OFFERED WITH UODC
BEGINNER: These classes are designed for dancers who have little to no experience dancing and are looking for somewhere simple to start!
BEGINNER - INTERMEDIATE: These classes are designed for dancers who have some experience with recreational dance
INTERMEDIATE: These classes are designed for dancers who have experience dancing at a recreational level.
INTERMEDIATE - ADVANCED: These classes are designed for dancers who have experience dancing at a recreational or competitive level, and can pick up choreography fairly quickly.
ADVANCED: These classes are designed for dancers who have several years of experience with competition level dancing or examinations, and can pick up choreography quickly.
ALL LEVELS: These classes are designed for dancers from any dance level. Levels will be combined together, and is up to the choreographer's discretion.
HEELS
Heels is a style that highlights the more sultry aspects of dance and includes notes of jazz. It is a style for dancers to embrace themselves while performing with heels. While some may perceive heels choreography to be provocative, it is actually a very empowering art form.
CONTEMPORARY
Contemporary combines the dance styles Modern, Jazz, and Lyrical. This style allows dancers to demonstrate creativity and expression through dance.
HIP HOP
Hip Hop works on creating style through sharp and funky movements. This style incorporates street style, jazz funk, and breaking. It is full of energy and allows dancers to groove and feel the music.
LYRICAL
Lyrical focuses on the combination of ballet and jazz dance styles. Working on the connection of movements. This style allows dancers to dance fluidly with the lyrics and whilst expressing emotions.
JAZZ
Jazz is a style that is usually of faster, upbeat tempo and incorporates technique and sharp movements. This class allows dancers to perform to a feel-good song and connect their movements.
MUSICAL THEATRE
Musical Theatre focuses on acting through facial and physical movements in a dance piece. This class focuses on drama, performing as a character and it's always super energetic!
TAP
Tap focuses on developing sounds and rhythm through the feet. It is a very stylized dance and allows dancers to explore their musicality to various types of music. Tap shoes must be worn to develop these sounds.
NEW STYLES THIS YEAR:
Afro beats: Using popular afrobeats music from across Africa, this upbeat and groovy dance style leans on traditional African moves, merging it with current trends from across diaspora
Popping & Animation: Similar to hip hop movements, however it focuses more on the fluidity of movement and exploring the dancers musicality
Modern: This style incorporates notes of ballet and contemporary. It is an expressive dance with large and classical movements, focusing on fluidity.
Open: This style of dance incorporates various aspects of nearly every style; mainly jazz, lyrical, contemporary and modern. This style allows for dancers to create movement based on musicality and fluidity.
Acro: This style of dance incorporates acrobatic tricks into dances. It may include gymnastic tricks, as well as partner and group tricks.
